Gamelan Summit & Cross-Cultural Celebration - Berkeley

Sunday October 18, 7:00 pm

Featuring Pusaka Sunda and Gamelan Sekan Jaya (doors open at 6:00 pm)
This event brings together for the first time the Bay Area’s four internationally known gamelan orchestras, as well as two groups that fuse Indonesian and American culture through music and dance. The concert features traditional gamelan music and dance representing Bali, Java and West Java, as well as new work by today’s generation of artists from both sides of the world. There will also be free workshops and performances, and Indonesian Arts & Crafts vendors in the lobby beginning at 2:00 pm.

Each of the traditional groups at this event was founded by an extraordinary Indonesian artist, and each has been sustained by the commitment of its group members along with the support of their local and global communities. Many of today’s performers have spent years or decades studying, performing, and passing these arts on to new generations, and forming new bonds and creating new communities in the process.

This event is a part of the Indonesian-American Cross Cultural Music Project, which brings these communities together in celebration of art, music and culture.
